Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri, a person accused of killing two cops while acting because the leader of an Al Qaida group within the Iraqi city of Fallujah was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, federal officials said on Friday.
It is pertinent to get the facts straight and check your sources, especially on foreign matters. An article on the extradition of proclaimed leader of Al Qaida popped onto my radar today. The only problem was, the source was one I had never heard of.
Gulfnews.com wrote that Ali Yousif Ahmed Al-Nouri, 42, is needed in Iraq on charges of the premeditated murder of Iraqi cops in 2006, in line with an announcement by the US Attorney’s Office District of Arizona.
In order to fact check this source, I decided a simple Google search would be a good place to start. Upon searching Al-Nouri’s name, I found official US District Court documents signed and sealed by the Arizona district attorney. The article's validity seemed to check out. This proves that, although the source is not well-known the information can sometimes still be useful.
An Iraqi judge issued a warrant for Al-Nouri’s arrest and also the government there issued an extradition request to the US Department of Justice, the statement said. The Department of Justice sought a bench warrant for Al-Nouri and he was taken into custody on Thursday in Phoenix. He appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Phoenix on Friday in reference to proceedings to extradite him to Iraq, the statement said.
According to the Iraqi government, al-Nouri was the leader of an al Qaeda group in Fallujah which planned operations targeting Iraqi police. The statement noted the main points within the Iraqi complaint were allegations that had yet to been proven in court.
