For only the second time in 100 years, there is snow layering the city of Baghdad. In the mountainous regions, there are many accounts of snow how in the valleys closer to sea level it is extremely rare.

According to USA Today, in Tahrir Square, a stronghold for Baghdad’s demonstrators, young men and women threw snowballs and drew anti-government slogans across the ground. In the middle of the summer, the average temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Many locals took advantage of the snowfall going outside and enjoying the unique weather experience that presents a subtle distraction from the turmoil the country has seen recently.
